OpenAI Launches ‘ChatGPT Health’, an AI Tool to Help Users Navigate Their Healthcare

1 Mins read

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Health, a dedicated experience designed to help users better understand and manage their health by securely combining personal health data with artificial intelligence.

Health-related questions are already among the most common uses of ChatGPT, with more than 230 million people worldwide seeking health and wellness information every week, according to OpenAI’s de-identified data. The new feature builds on this demand by offering a specialised, privacy-focused environment where users can connect medical records and wellness apps to receive more personalised guidance.

ChatGPT Health allows users to securely link data from platforms such as Apple Health, MyFitnessPal and Function, enabling them to better interpret test results, prepare for doctor’s appointments, track wellness trends, and understand lifestyle choices. OpenAI stresses that the tool is not meant to replace doctors, but to support informed conversations with healthcare providers.

Strong Privacy Safeguards

Given the sensitive nature of health information, OpenAI has introduced extra layers of security for ChatGPT Health. All health conversations are stored in a separate space, isolated from regular chats, and protected with specialised encryption. Importantly, health data will not be used to train AI models, the company said.

Users remain fully in control of their information, with the ability to delete health data, disconnect apps, or enable multi-factor authentication for added protection.

Built With Doctors

ChatGPT Health was developed in close collaboration with over 260 physicians from 60 countries, covering dozens of medical specialties. Their input has helped shape how the system responds—ensuring clarity, safety, and appropriate referrals to clinicians when needed.

The tool is evaluated using HealthBench, a physician-designed assessment framework that prioritises real-world clinical judgment rather than simple exam-style accuracy tests.

Limited Rollout

Access will initially be provided to a small group of early users on Free, Plus, Go and Pro plans, excluding users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK. Medical record integrations are currently limited to the United States, and Apple Health connections require iOS devices.

OpenAI says it plans to expand access globally in the coming weeks as the system is refined.

Empowering Patients

By centralising scattered health data and offering AI-powered insights, ChatGPT Health aims to help users take a more active role in their wellbeing—making healthcare more understandable, accessible and personalised, while keeping clinicians at the centre of care.

Interested users can sign up for the waitlist as OpenAI continues its phased rollout.
