Meta has introduced two major features to its Threads app — direct messaging and a new visual tool called the Threads Highlighter — as part of ongoing efforts to distinguish the platform from Instagram and foster deeper conversations.
Now in its third year, Threads has seen steady growth, with Meta reporting that over a third of daily users follow largely different accounts compared to Instagram. The company views this as evidence that Threads is carving out a unique user base.
One of the newly launched features is in-app messaging, enabling users to continue conversations privately. Meta said this has been among the most requested features and is aimed at helping users build and strengthen relationships directly within the platform.
For safety reasons, messaging is currently limited to followers or mutual Instagram connections aged 18 and above. Meta said it would continue to prioritise user safety by applying its existing privacy standards and protections to the new feature.
Upcoming messaging updates include group messaging, inbox filters, and enhanced controls that allow users to manage who can message them — even if they aren’t mutual followers. A separate folder for message requests will also be introduced.
In addition to messaging, Meta unveiled the Threads Highlighter — a visual element designed to surface and spotlight unique user perspectives that prompt thoughtful discussions. The highlighter will first appear in content discovery areas of the app and in sections marking trending topics, with plans to expand its presence over time.
As Threads evolves, Meta said it remains focused on supporting online communities and amplifying diverse voices through improved tools for discovery and interaction.
